Last week, members of The Tide traveled to Hofstra University for their annual Student Press Day. The student conference was focused on diversity in journalism and the media; the conference also provided students with an opportunity to interact with professionals in the field of journalism.
Keynote speaker Pete McCarthy, host of WOR Sports Zone and Mets on Deck, spoke to the room of 300 students about his experiences in the field of journalism and his career in sports broadcasting. Following the keynote speaker was a panel discussion about diversity in the media. The panel featured Newsday reporter, Keith Herbert, NBC News reporter, Pei-Sze Cheng, and Hofstra professors in Religion and Journalism.
The students attended breakout sessions on Photojournalism and Graphic Design, Social and Digital Media Reporting, Investigative Journalism, and Sports Journalism. Each session was led by a professional in that field. During the breakout sessions, the students were able to ask questions of the professionals and interact with them.
Overall the day was engaging and a wonderful learning experience for the journalists. Students expressed eager attitudes about attending the conference next year.
