This winter season is a brand new start for the Long Beach Girl’s Varsity Basketball Team. Last season, the team finished their season with a great record and made it to the quarterfinals in the postseason. The girls are starting this year fresh after losing five starting seniors from last year.
We spoke with some of the team members to get a more accurate idea of what the team’s expectations are for the season and to learn about the members of the team.
There are a lot of young, new faces and some experienced, returning seniors. Talking to senior, Jaclyn Marry, she told us, “We have a lot of young faces, but we still expect to continue our high caliber of play.” The girls are very excited for the new season and to play with each other.
When asked about the team chemistry, senior, Lily Hornung, excitedly told us, “Team dynamics this year have shifted for the better with our mixed ages on the team. Our chemistry carries on and off the court.” Fellow senior, Alexis Farina, stated, “I’m looking forward to this season. We have a great team with some exceptional girls on and off the court. We’re not just teammates; we’re family.” There are high expectations for the girls to follow and we are sure they will pull through and make the school proud.
With great players comes a great coaching staff. The varsity head coach is Coach Ciccone. Coach Ciccone played at Long Beach High School and also played in college at SUNY Cortland. This will be her third year coaching the Long Beach Girl’s Varsity Team, and she knows most of the athletes well. She is very experienced and the team respects her coaching knowledge and leadership.
Her great coaching has definitely shown in the varsity team’s performance over the past few seasons. When asked about Coach Ciccone’s leadership Melissa Marry responded, “We have a great, experienced coach and we are learning a lot from her, which will show when we play. I’m very excited for the start of this new season.”
We also had the chance to speak with Coach Ciccone about the 2014-2015 season. She commented on the expectations for the team:
“I expected this year to be a rebuilding year; however, after practicing for the past week and a half, I’ve realized that we are going to be one of the top conference contenders as well as one of the top class AA contenders. We’ve got a great bunch of girls that are willing to learn and I’m very excited to start the season.”
Long Beach High School is lucky to have a coach like Coach Ciccone. The basketball team is expected to have a great season. Be sure to come support the team for their home games! Check out this link to the 2014-2015 schedule. http://www.lbeach.org/departments/hs_sports_schedule_winter
Best of luck to all the players on the girl’s varsity basketball team.
