If you were looking for a night full of entertainment, excitement, and dancing, Long Beach High School’s production of Hairspray fulfilled your every wish.
Hairspray is about a girl named Tracy Turnblad who is not exactly the perfect lady. She is a chunky teenager whose dream is to dance on the famous Corny Collins Show. She teaches Baltimore a lot about integration after landing a spot on the television show. Although this movie is very popular, it differs from the way Long Beach High School’s Drama Department presented it.
Long Beach High School put on a show that was full of quick witted comedy and original dancing not seen anywhere else. “I felt like I was transported into the 1960’s!” said Claudia Canner when she came to see the production. Many said that the kids made people believe that they were at a real Broadway show. The actors really seemed to understand segregation. The results of the performance were astonishing, people were outspoken on how happy they were that segregation is now in the past. There were numerous variations of race, color, religion, and gender to form an outstanding melting pot of talent.
This musical was a must see for all ages. The cast has shown us that in order to make a dream come true, all you need is some toe tapping and a bit of hairspray to make it all happen.
